Swine Flu opinion

Powerfeedback has been on the forefront of garnering public opinion regarding the H1N1 Swine Flu epidemic. Our results have yielded extremely valuable information for our clients.

The World Health Organization has raised its global pandemic alert level from 3 to 4 and sources say the alert will almost inevitably rise to level 5.

What will this mean for your business? Now is the time to calmly, yet quickly measure attitude. As of this writing, there are 65 reported cases of H1N1 Flu infection in the United States. At the present time, none of us know what is next with this fast moving health crisis.

Official Swine Flu poll results released

Powerfeedback just concluded a Domestic and International survey regarding attitude and perception concerning Swine Influenza. Here are some highlights from the questionnaire.

1) Are you aware of the Swine Influenza (aka “swine flu”) outbreak that is currently affecting the USA as well as other Countries?

    * 94.89%    Yes

    *   6.02%    No

2) Are you confident that Government agencies, officials and health organizations are properly prepared to deal with the “swine flu” outbreak?

    * 48.68%    Yes

    * 51.32%    No

3) How concerned are you with your own safety, as well as that of your family during the “public health emergency” issued by the World Health Organization regarding the “Swine Flu” outbreak?

    * Very               22.37%

    * Somewhat      42.11%

    * Not very         30.26%

    * Not at all          5.26%

There were 611 responses to the survey, and the results were garnered within a 24-hour period. In addition to email databases, social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn were used to garner survey participants. An important side note to this report is how active these social networking sites have been during this crisis. I am seeing special pages set up where people can share their feelings, fears, and opinions on this topic.

Whether Swine Flu has landed in your state, or your particular area as of yet or not, now is the time to have a plan in place with your staff to deal with this should your workplace be impacted. Brian Wingfield of Forbes wrote a very interesting article regarding Pandemic Planning that is worth the read.

“Troubled by the possible shuttering of his hometown paper, Sen. John Kerry reached out to the Boston Globe on Tuesday, then called for Senate hearings to address the woes of the nation’s print media.”

I am absolutely floored by Senator John Kerry’s actions in this regard. I have written extensively about this in the past, so, I will limit my remarks here, and make some simple points. Newspapers are dying because-

Internet
Cable News
Print Media is not timely
Print Media is usually slanted left or right, and not independent

Translation? We all knew years ago that newspapers would face this fate, and to be clear, this is NOT due to the current economic conditions.

If Senator Kerry is so concerned about jobs, as I have also written about earlier, why isn’t he helping small businesses? He started to Shepard S. 2300 (The Small Business Contracting Revitalization Act of 2007) through the Senate, which, would have finally allowed small businesses to legitimately, and fairly, compete for Federal Government small business set-aside business contracts. Why did Senator Kerry allow this legislation die?

It is pretty clear that Senator Kerry is more interested in appeasing his supporter base versus actually pushing for programs that would actually help currently viable, and future relevant businesses and industries.

So often we wait for the climate and conditions in life to be perfect before we feel safe enough to step forward, trust, and be our authentic selves. What we don’t realize is that in order to create the ideal climate we are waiting for, we must be authentic first.
